Background of the Study
National unity is a critical goal for any diverse society, and educational institutions play a fundamental role in promoting this ideal. In Sokoto South LGA, Sokoto State, secondary schools have increasingly incorporated religious education into their curricula as a means to foster national unity among students. Religious education, traditionally focused on spiritual and moral teachings, now also addresses themes of tolerance, respect, and shared national identity. These teachings are designed to bridge ethnic, cultural, and religious divides by emphasizing common values and the importance of collective national development (Ibrahim, 2023). Educational reforms in the region have led to the integration of unity-promoting content within religious education modules, highlighting historical narratives, civic responsibilities, and the cultural heritage that binds the nation together (Olawale, 2024). In a context where diversity is both a strength and a potential source of tension, the role of religious education extends beyond mere doctrinal instruction to include lessons on citizenship and social cohesion. Schools in Sokoto South LGA employ various pedagogical strategies—such as debates, role-playing, and community engagement projects—to help students internalize these values. Moreover, educators are increasingly aware of the need to update traditional approaches to resonate with contemporary societal challenges while preserving core cultural values (Adeyemi, 2023). The integration of religious education in secondary schools is viewed as an essential strategy for mitigating divisive tendencies and promoting a harmonious national outlook. This study will critically assess how religious education influences students’ perceptions of national unity, examining curricular content, instructional methods, and external socio-cultural influences. By exploring these dimensions, the research aims to determine whether religious education effectively contributes to a unified national identity and to identify best practices for its implementation (Bello, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized potential of religious education to foster national unity, significant challenges remain in its effective implementation in secondary schools in Sokoto South LGA. Variability in curriculum content and teaching methods has led to inconsistencies in how values of national unity are conveyed to students (Olawale, 2024). Educators often struggle to balance traditional religious teachings with the contemporary need for inclusiveness and tolerance, leading to gaps in student understanding and application of these principles. Furthermore, the absence of standardized assessment tools complicates efforts to measure the impact of religious education on promoting national unity. Socio-economic disparities and cultural divisions within the community further undermine these educational initiatives (Adeyemi, 2023). Consequently, while religious education is intended to bridge differences and promote a collective national identity, its effectiveness remains under question. This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating the alignment between religious education curricula and the desired outcomes of national cohesion. It will investigate the challenges faced by educators in delivering unity-promoting content and examine the extent to which these initiatives translate into positive behavioral changes among students. The goal is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the factors that facilitate or hinder the role of religious education in fostering national unity, and to offer evidence-based recommendations for enhancing its impact.
Objectives of the Study:
1. To assess the impact of religious education on promoting national unity among secondary school students.
2. To identify challenges in the implementation of religious education programs that promote national cohesion.
3. To recommend strategies for improving the effectiveness of religious education in fostering national unity.
Research Questions:
1. How does religious education influence students’ perceptions of national unity?
2. What challenges do schools face in integrating unity-promoting content into religious education?
3. What measures can be taken to enhance the role of religious education in fostering national unity?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Religious education significantly enhances students’ sense of national unity.
2. Inadequate curriculum content undermines the effectiveness of religious education in promoting unity.
3. Improved teacher training in religious education positively influences national unity outcomes.
Significance of the Study
